Proofreading is never just a "quick" look at something.
Before reviewing language use on a micro level, it is important to establish the audience in mind in order to assess the suitability of the language in the document. Does the author only want to reach specialists in their field, or should everyone be able to understand their piece of work?
Correcting grammar is just one element of the process. It`s also about deleting irrelevant posts and identifying repetition, but also about bringing other manners of expression to the author`s attention.
Many authors tend to produce complex structures in a bid to sound more scientific. This, however, often results in the reader being unable to follow the author. In this case, the author is made aware of more academic eloquent ways of expressing themselves which don`t result in complex sentences. Less is more!
When proofreading a document, it is also important to consider the order of points within a paragraph, to help the author deliver their intended message. Any contextual inconsistencies are also brought to the author`s attention. The style used by the author is also considered in terms of its suitability in reaching the intended audience.
Proofreading is about bringing a piece of work to life!
